Search functionality cumbersome to use; need search box on top navbar

If I want to search the site - which is the premier and typical way to access its content - I need to:

  1. Locate the Search-related area on the top navigation bar (which is not difficult, but it doesn't immediately stand out, since it is not a highlit area, and has the same font and text color as other items on the navbar).
  2. Press it (which also takes a tiny amount of time, since you hesitate for a split-second regarding where exactly to press)
  3. Take a moment to figure out the pop-up dialog that's come up
  4. Click the text box at the bottom of the dialog
  5. Take a moment to adjust to adjust to the fact that a list has popped up under the text box, i.e. pop-up from a pop-up.

This is too inconvenient. Instead, a search box should be open on the top navigation bar. It's ok for a pop-up to appear under it, but all of the other stuff is a delay and a distraction and shouldn't happen IMNSHO.

This has definitely been complained about before and is of course network-wide. You might also be interested in proposals like https://meta.codidact.com/posts/295497 .
