I object to [stl]

+4
−2

Currently the tag [stl] is marked as a sub-tag of c++, implying a meaning of "standard-template-library". However I see both of the questions currently using the tag mean the 3D object description format.

As I see it both meanings are relevant to Software Development and there are very different. So the tag need disambiguation.

I suggest [c++-stl] for the C++ library and [stl-format] for the object description language, but I'm open to other suggestions.

Am I to take it that people don’t care for my (allegedly funny) title, or do people really think this ambiguity is OK?

Moshi‭ wrote over 3 years ago

@dmckee Probably the title. I take no issue with the content, but I'd suggest [c++-stl] and [stl-format] to further disambiguate

@Moshi Yeah. That's better.

@dmckee I've create an [stl-format] tag and manually retagged the relevent questions.

Is STL a thing in C++ still though? Has it not been swallowed up by the "standard library" just like everything else? Why do we need a tag for it to begin with?

dmckee‭ wrote over 3 years ago

@Lundin Well, the containers and algorithms template code has certainly been folded in with the rest of the standard library. On SomeplaceElse I read that tag as "I want to ask about the templated parts of the standard library and not just about c++ features in the raw", which I consider to be useful information about the question. Is there a better name for the tag?
