Unfair accusation in a comment and consequent loss of *actual* reputation

+5
−0

I posted an answer here

and IIRC received one or two upvotes.

Then a user falsely accused me of copy-pasting from Wikipedia without citing my sources.

To that accusation I replied here.

However, now my answer is at -3 votes, apparently because of that false accusation.

I guess that this is also due to the fact that comments in threads don't show up and only the title does (which in that case is extremely prejudicing). So the people likely see the thread title and downvote without further examination.

Now, I understand that up/downvotes are a matter of personal opinions. But that answer really doesn't deserve downvotes. But that's not the point.

The point is, a false accusation has been raised and the result is that. It is not really something that induce me to contribute more to the site. Not just because it hurts my rep points but because it hurts my real reputation, since I post under my real name.

Note that I am an active and high-rep user (20k+) on ElectricalEngineering SE and I've posted quite a lot there. Whoever wants to check can see that I'm fairly thorough in my citations.

Moreover, having worked in academia in my distant past, I know very well what it means to cite other people's work.

EDIT

(To clarify things and address the feedback I had in answers and comments)

First of all thanks to CD staff and mods for handling this. Now the problem is solved.

I still have to learn how to use the interface and I find the whole threaded comments a bit confusing. It is more flexible than the SE comments and potentially useful, but I find a bit difficult to follow the various combinations. Maybe it's an interface thing. We'll see.

Anyway, that to explain why I had some difficulties in getting the "workflow" right and why maybe my complaints seemed a bit off (I scattered the information a bit, and I noticed only later that a comment could be flagged, but the "flag box" was tiny, so I didn't know if I had to explain things better somewhere else).

Now to the point: although I mildly complained about downvotes in this meta post, because it seemed to me they were prompted by the comment I was pissed off for, I really didn't care too much about that. The mods explained that they were cast before that comment, so it's ok.

As I explained better in some other comment, the BIG problem was the unwarranted accusation of me having copy-pasted material from Wikipedia without citing the source.

I can understand that for many people outside professional R&D business or Academia plagiarism may not seem such a big deal or may seem "only" a copyright infringement issue.

However, everyone in the field knows how bad such a behavior is (people have been thrown out of PhD programs or had their degree nullified for such things - even a former German minister of defense, who had to resign). Hence my heated reaction about the unwarranted accusation.

It's a matter of reputation. REAL life reputation, since I post under my real name (and I take pride in that). Although there are some good reasons to post under a nickname on the Internet, I think in a network like CoDidact, which strives for quality content, accountability is paramount.

Although I haven't been working in Academia for ages, I still have friends there and that accusation still makes me cringe. Moreover, I work as a teacher and it still looks terrible if a teacher appears to be cheating.

Hence my primary goal was to have that comment removed from my answer, although it might have not been so explicit in this post (I clarified that in the flag and in other comments).

Do you have any evidence that the other 2 downvotes are due to the comment of that other user? (10 comments)
Looks like it is not copied from Wikipedia. (1 comment)

...or do we just have to take your word that your conjecture about those other 2 votes is the only possible plausible explanation? It doesn't matter what you believe. As long as you have no evidence, your conjecture is as much accusatory to the two downvoters as that comment from that 3rd user. (1/2)

(2/2) Anyways, i agree that that comment seems to be baseless, and a bit weird in my opinion. That said, perhaps that user just had a shit day, too much coffein or whatnot. I am sure you never had and never will have a bad day on the interwebs. Unless that user exhibits a pattern of repeating such behavior, there is little to discuss nor to do, imo. As long as this remains a one-off occurence, there is no gain in getting worked up over it...

As I explained I'm getting really pissed off not because of the loss of rep points, but the loss of actual reputation. That comment is still there and is associated with my answer and my REAL name. Anyone working in academia or related fields knows how bad is that accusation, since it would be very bad if it were true.

You tell me I have no evidence about the downvotes. You are right. The same is true for that comment. There is no evidence that I copy-pasted. So that comment has to go (who cares about the downvotes). And the fact the commenter had a shit day may justify his hasty posting. But that is not a good reason for that comment to remain there. That's why I brought it on meta.

Ah, so you want to get that comment thread deleted then. My apologies, i failed to get that from your post. Yeah, i agree with that request, not least because a user themselves cannot (yet) edit the topic title of the comment thread they themselves opened, even if they wanted. Not sure if deleting all comments in a comment thread will delete the entire thread (incl. thread title). If you don't mind, please allow me to quickly test this here...

elgonzo‭ wrote almost 3 years ago

Alright, test concluded. Deleting all comments in a thread should delete the thread itself. Therefore, i would like to suggest (just my 2c worth of personal opinion, ofc) to wait a day or two and see whether and how that user responds to your comment response. Perhaps they will respond positively. Or maybe not. But i would try giving them at least a chance. Only if the situation is not improving after a day or two, i would call the mod team into action. Again, that's just me. You do you, ofc.

Thank you really for spending your time for testing that. However, I had already flagged that comment, but I wasn't sure of the usual workflow here. So I contextually posted that complaint on meta. And I still have to adapt to the user interface (which is still a bit more cumbersome that the one on the SE network, to which I'm used).

elgonzo‭ Not sure if deleting all comments in a comment thread will delete the entire thread (incl. thread title) Usually, deleting all comments in a comment thread won't delete the entire thread. It will available with 0 comments. And, only moderator or, user with curate privilege can delete the whole thread. Usually, I had commented after reading some WIki pages. That weren't directly copy-pasted. I thought that it had edited from Wiki context. And, I had retracted my down flag. Sorry!

@Istiak, i did a test, creating and writing a comment in it. Then i deleted the comment again. The comment thread did disappear.I did not find any option/possibility to bring it back. I am not a mod, and i am not a curator. I don't know what the behavior was in the past, but at the time of doing my test, the Codidact software indeed removed the empty comment thread.

elgonzo‭ Tested https://a.dev.codidact.org/comments/thread/120 .... But, empty thread won't show directly. you have to click on Show more. If you had tested here. Than, I am sure that Alexei had removed that thread... (deleted thread only visible for curator or, mod) ... (without show more with show more)
