How are software recommendations handled?

How are software recommendations handled on https://software.codidact.com/ ? https://outdoors.codidact.com/ has a "gear recommendations" section, so it seems like Codidact is open to the idea.

I saw https://software.codidact.com/posts/287107 but it's about books specifically.

What about questions like:

  • What Python library can I use to connect to Postgres?
  • What is a good build system? (ie. makefile, etc)
  • What file format can I use for my configuration files?
  • What is an IDE I can use for large and complex C++ projects?

New recommendations category? (4 comments)
New recommendations category?

Would the community benefit from a separate category for software recommendations (like the code reviews category)?

I would say yes.

  1. People who hate recs can avoid them by not going into that section.
  2. People with PTSD from Stack's moderation can clearly see that yes, recs are okay.
  3. Outdoors already set the precedent.

That is, assuming it's not a lot of work to add a section. If it requires changes to the code, a simple recommendation-request tag would be fine too.

Codidact is already set up to have multiple categories per community, so I think it just needs an admin to add it (if the community indicates support for it).

Adding a separate category was discussed before here: Software recommendations category. Nobody came up with much in the way of arguments in favour for creating a new category.
