`grep` is not the right tool for your case. You can use `basename`: basename a/b/c --> c basename a/b/c/ --> c or, in your case basename branches/features/arm_and_musl --> arm_and_musl which, within a sh script, you would use as dirname=`basename "$CCSR"` Note, that if you need to call `sh` explicitly, you have to give the `-c` command line argument to `sh` if you want to pass commands on the command line.
