Comment Post #278591 "One aspect that helps with having a good balance is to have an enough number of users that help newbies ask good (or at least decent) questions. This is something reachable within rather small communities." Yes, but only in small communities. Once we grow, he newbies will overwhelm such efforts.

Comment Post #278172 I've no problem with self-answered questions, but they should still be good-quality questions. This isn't one (for the reasons I mentioned above). No honest asker will (or at least: no honest asker _should_) ask the question as you did, so you shouldn't either.

Comment Post #278172 I can tell you only why I downvoted; I can't speak for anyone else. (1) You've tagged this with two different language tags. Which language are you asking about? (2) Part of your question is about a difference in how two compilers act -- but you don't say which compilers you're referring to.

I then typed the same text in Microsoft Word and...

Comment Post #277235 –1. This proposal conflates scope (what subjects are included) with question quality. For example "where the poster only presents a problem with no attempts to solve it themselves" if they'd be fine if they showed research done are not out of scope; likewise "Debug requests with insufficient code pos...

Comment Post #277183 @PeterTaylor maybe I am mistaken (I'm certainly no expert in the field) but "software" to me connotes a program file is shared with others to run -- or something like that, I'm not sure exactly. I do know this: I write SQL queries _all the time_ in my work (and Perl or Python or R scripts sometimes) ...

Question "Software Development" to the exclusion of other programming and scripting?
The site is called "Software Development", and the subtitle on the homepage is "General Q&A about software development -- code, design, process, tools, testing, and more". Am I to understand, then, that it's about software development to the exclusion of other programming and scripting? Can I not,...
