"One aspect that helps with having a good balance is to have an enough number of users that help newbies ask good (or at least decent) questions. This is something reachable within rather small communities." Yes, but only in small communities. Once we grow, he newbies will overwhelm such efforts. (more) |

I've no problem with self-answered questions, but they should still be good-quality questions. This isn't one (for the reasons I mentioned above). No honest asker will (or at least: no honest asker _should_) ask the question as you did, so you shouldn't either. (more) |

@PeterTaylor maybe I am mistaken (I'm certainly no expert in the field) but "software" to me connotes a program file is shared with others to run -- or something like that, I'm not sure exactly. I do know this: I write SQL queries _all the time_ in my work (and Perl or Python or R scripts sometimes) ... (more) |

Question | — |
"Software Development" to the exclusion of other programming and scripting? The site is called "Software Development", and the subtitle on the homepage is "General Q&A about software development -- code, design, process, tools, testing, and more". Am I to understand, then, that it's about software development to the exclusion of other programming and scripting? Can I not,... (more) |
