"Software Development" to the exclusion of other programming and scripting?

+4
−1

The site is called "Software Development", and the subtitle on the homepage is "General Q&A about software development -- code, design, process, tools, testing, and more".

Am I to understand, then, that it's about software development to the exclusion of other programming and scripting? Can I not, for example, ask about a sed script I use to process text files, or a SQL query I use to process data?

It's meant to include all programming and scripting. By calling it Software Development we wanted to convey that it's not just code but also those other things. I'll adjust the description of the Q&A category; if people can propose better descriptions there, and also for our description on the list of sites, please do.

I've changed the category description to: "General Q&A about programming, scripting, software design & architecture, process, tools, testing, and more."

Much clearer. Thanks.

Besides, at least SQL is decidedly a programming language. It's a declarative rather than an imperative language (say what you want done, not how to get it done -- or, at least, that's the idea), but it's not the only declarative programming language in use, although probably one of the most widely used ones.

To me all of that is programming, so thank you for pointing out that others might make distinctions we didn't intend.

The issue here is that some purists only consider compiled/interpreted languages to be "programming languages" - they are used to write programs. Whereas SQL for example is only used for the purpose fetch data from a database, HTML is only for describing the layout of a website and so on. A "script" can be anything really. I don't see why things like SQL should be excluded from the site though, especially when there is no dedicated database site for such questions.
