This question is not within the scope of Software Development.

This question was closed; new answers can no longer be added. Users with the reopen privilege may vote to reopen this question if it has been improved or closed incorrectly.

I'm trying to create an encrypted¹ zip archive using bsdtar. Here's where I got stuck:

bsdtar -c --options='zip:encryption' --passphrase "secret" -f test.zip test

This is the error I get:

bsdtar: Unknown module name: `zip'

How do I get around this error to create an encrypted zip archive?

I'm on Arch Linux 5.8.14 using bsdtar 3.4.3.

¹I know that password-protected zip files aren't very secure: https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/35818/are-password-protected-zip-files-secure

How is this related to software development?

@Matthias Braun Welcome to Software Codidact. Unfortunately, your question does not seem related to software development. I have already proposed a community for this type of questions, but we are not ready yet.

Matthias Braun‭ wrote over 3 years ago

Well, it relates to scripting and tools.

Charlie Brumbaugh‭ wrote over 3 years ago

@Alexei Would using a zip program in a PHP script to archive folders after downloading data from a DB be on topic? In other words does the OP just need the right context to ask the question?

Alexei‭ wrote over 3 years ago

@‭Charlie Brumbaugh Yes, I think the context is important. I have little experience with working in Linux, but I assume the context used to issue the command (some tokens might not interpreted in the same way as when run from bash or similar). The context is also helpful to propose alternatives to what is tried (maybe avoid XY problems).

Charlie Brumbaugh‭ wrote over 3 years ago

@Alexei my point being that leaving this open if the command was in a bash script and closing it if just running from the command line seems very arbitrary. If I add "In my bash script " to the front of the question, does that make it on-topic?

I have reopened it since we do not have the Power User community yet. I still think it might fit better in such a community, but since it is still not yet live, I guess we can have it here.

Questions about the use of software for other purposes than programming is clearly off-topic. Whether we have somewhere to direct such questions or not doesn't matter. This is not about scripting but about how to use a command line zip program.

The debate related to this question made me go further with Super User site proposal. Once we start it, we will migrate this question there.

Matthias Braun‭ wrote over 2 years ago

Alexei‭ I'm glad that this debate had a positive effect and Power User came to life. If possible, we could migrate this question to Power User since I've found an answer to my question in the meantime: bsdtar --options zip:encryption --auto-compress -cf test.zip test_file

Matthias Braun‭ Currently there is no automatic way to migrate a Q&A from a community to another. Can you please create a self-answered Q&A directly there (add a question, copy-paste from here, and add your answer to it)? Following this, I will edit the question here to include a link to the new location. Thanks.
