Can we migrate office suite related questions to the Power Users community?

+6

Power Users has just been launched and I remember that Software Development has some content related to office suite usage (example).

Is it OK to migrate these questions to the Power Users community?

Better wait until their scope has settled. If we are not launching an office suite community then it would make lots of sense for Power Users to create a category for it. Lundin‭ about 1 month ago

@Lundin are questions about office suites so different from questions about other applications that tags aren't sufficient? (Question for Power Users meta, presumably.) Monica Cellio‭ about 1 month ago

@Monica Cellio‭ No but they will be plenty and risk to drown out all the other content because of it. Just look at Power Users right now, someone dropped 10 or so questions about MS Word there. The same will happen when we migrate all office suite-related questions from here to there. Lundin‭ about 1 month ago

I went ahead and made a proposal on Power User that a separate category for office suites should be made. I suggest that we wait and see where that proposal lands.

If a category for these questions is made, we can go ahead and migrate. (Such a category would also soften the "bump blow" that comes from migrating some I dunno, some 50 questions(?), from here to there.)

In the meantime we can discuss overlapping scopes. I think most agree that excel formulas etc are more suited for Power User. But in the above proposal I also identified two more overlaps with this site: VBA and MS Access. These sit in some grey area between Software Development and Power Users. We know from SO that what to do with VBA (and excel) questions were a constant source of conflict. Better to discuss sooner rather than later what to do with such questions.

EDIT as per 2021-06-08:

My proposal wasn't well-received and it's unlikely that a category will get created. So I'd say just go ahead and migrate. If someone whines about bumping/bombardment of office suite questions, well they have been warned that could have been avoided.

Regarding the frontier. I would put it at Turing completeness. So Excel's formulae (without LAMBDA) go to Power User. VBA to Software Development. That being said... Using a limited subset of the features of a language can make it non Turing complete. And people commonly using such subset will feel they are better suited to Power Users even if the whole language is Turing complete (as it happens now with Excel formulae once LAMBDA is included). So some arbitrarity is unavoidable. Estela‭ 11 days ago

@Estela‭ I don't think we can use that as a distinction. HTML, SQL, batch script and so on is on-topic here. Lundin‭ 10 days ago

batch script is Turing complete. HTML... I am not an expert, but it is or it was a description language as opposed to a programming language. So asking if HTML is Turing complete is like asking if an apple is Turing complete. It still has a place here because programming is not the only thing relevant to programming. As for SQL, it is Turing complete with CTE and not Turing complete wihout CTE. SQL is actually a good argument against my proposal since SQL without CTE is beyond any ... Estela‭ 10 days ago

... doubt relevant here. Same happens with regular expresions, which are not turing complete but are a programming language. Hmmm, yeah, scrap my idea. Estela‭ 10 days ago

That being said. And this applies to office tools. I would say that Turning Completeness is sufficient to qualify but not necessary. So if something, like VBA, is Turing complete we need look no more. It belongs here. Estela‭ 10 days ago

I had seen 3 "related" question for this :

  1. Office suites category ~ proposed by @Lundin (My answer)
  2. Software Recommendations Category ~ proposed by @Moshi (My answer)
  3. Site for office suites ~ proposed by @SeverusSnape‭ (My answer)

All of these question are related. That's why I linked all of them one to another.

In site for office suites proposal @pnuts said :

Stack Overflow [SO] currently has over 1,000 Qs tagged both [excel] and [google-sheets], some Qs with tags for three different suites.

I have different opinion. As we know Software Codidact is for programming related Q&A. And, Office Suites aren't related to programming. So, that's completely off-topic in Software Codidact. But, in Software Codidact peoples had asked more than 50 questions related to Office Suites (Just guessing the number). In Power Users peoples had asked nearly 8 questions related to Office Suites.

I think Power Users is best suit for Office Suites question. But, Power Users and Linux Codidact is for "OS" related Q&A. So, it would be better if there was other category for Software Related Q&A.

Do creating new categories for per 100 software make sense?

So, if there was any Software Category where we can ask about any Software related Questions than, it would helpful. If staffs create two category one for Office Suites and, another for Software. But, Software can contains Office Suites. So, Office Suites category isn't a good idea.

Wait until moderator create a category/site for Office suites/Software.

Well at this point it doesn't look like my proposal for that category is getting any strong consensus, so it's unlikely to be created any time soon. "Software Category" would just be the general Q&A on Power Users. For now, that's the most suitable place to move all those questions. But it will create massive "bumping" and disturb that site quite a lot. Lundin‭ 26 days ago

@Lundin I think Power Users is new site. And, the site doesn't have much more good question at all. So, I think if he(Alexei) migrated these questions than, it won't be bad idea. But, if staffs create another category for Software/Office Suites. Then, mods have to migrate those questions again. And, I think migrating a question multiple times won't be a good idea Istiak‭ 26 days ago

My only concern is that it will seem like the site is just about Office questions and nothing else, it will momentarily "drown out" all other content. But the migration is just a single event, so maybe it should be done sooner rather than later. Lundin‭ 26 days ago
