What input functions can I use in TIO's PHP?

Try It Online! is an online interpreter for many supported languages, including PHP. I'm trying to solve coding challenges using the language, specifically "Hello, {name}!".

In PHP, you can literally add text outside of the script (<?php ?>) and it will output, which is what I did in the codeblock below. Currently, I'm struggling finding the input function for PHP. readline() and fscanf() aren't options for TIO:

Hello, <?php
$a=readline();
echo $a;
?>!

Try it online!

I'm not giving up yet, because I know for a fact that someone knows how can I set prompt for the program. So... how?

Question: What input functions work in PHP running from TIO?

I don't know all the ways you could process input data from within a PHP script in TIO, but i know this one... (1 comment)

You could use fgets to read from STDIN.

And to print the message, just use the short tag (<?= whatever, which is a shorthand to <?php echo whatever; ?>):

<?='Hello, '.fgets(STDIN).'!';

Try it online!

Of course you could also do:

<?php
echo 'Hello, '.fgets(STDIN).'!';

And there are also other functions you could use, such as file_get_contents("php://stdin") or stream_get_contents(STDIN), but as you said you're code-golfing, I guess the first option would be preferable[1].

  1. I'm not a code-golfer, so not sure if that's the shortest possible way. ↩︎
